ABSTRACT

This young lady has a typical presentation of achalasia, which tends to start with dysphagia to liquids and subsequently progresses to solids. Regurgitation of food at night is common due to pooling of food in the dilated oesophagus. Although she has lost some weight, which may cause concern about malignancy, her weight loss is far more likely to be a product of difficulty swallowing. Chest infections are common in patients with achalasia due to aspiration of regurgitated food particles.
