ABSTRACT

Under the Meeting of Parliament Act 1694, Parliament, by law, must be summoned to meet at least once in every three years. The practical reality is that after a general election, the next Parliament will be summoned quickly. This is because in practice, Parliament operates on an annual basis as the machinery of government necessitates

this (for example, income tax for the following year needs to be authorised by Parliament).
