ABSTRACT

The fungi called zygomycetes are really a number of disparate groups with ancient origins that predate the ascomycetes and basidiomycetes. For a long time, we have been uncertain about the evolutionary relationships of these groups that arise near the base of the fungal tree of life. However, this murky picture is of little concern to plant pathologists, as all of the significant plant pathogenic zygomycetes belong to a single lineage, the fungal subphylum Mucoromycotina, order Mucorales.
