ABSTRACT

Immediate response of the innate immune systems results from wounds, infection, or other cellular damage. Immune cells are recruited, producing cytokines and activating the complement cascade. Unwanted cells or particulates are subjected to phagocytosis, and nally, T cells of the adaptive immune system are recruited. Innate immunity is a vital component of protection and early wound healing, and inammation plays an important role in this defense (Miller and Watson 1965). Induced by cytokines secreted by the injured cells themselves, it is the rst response of the body to injury or invasion and serves to create a physical barrier for pathogens (Tracey 2007). Inammation also functions to promote early healing (Cotran et al. 1999).
