ABSTRACT

Modern power networks are made up of three distinct systems: generation, transmission, and distribution.Figure2.1showsasketchofatypicalpowersystem.Thegenerationsystemincludesthe mainpartsofthepowerplantssuchasturbinesandgenerators.Theenergyresourcesusedtogenerateelectricityinmostpowerplantsarecombustible,nuclear,orhydropower.Theburningoffossil fuelsoranuclearreactiongeneratesheatthatisconvertedintomechanicalmotionbythethermal turbines. In hydroelectric systems, the £ow of water through the turbine converts the potential or kineticenergyofthewaterintorotatingmechanicalenergy.Theseturbinesrotatetheelectromechanical generators that convert the mechanical energy into electric energy.
