ABSTRACT

MS applications were derived from many sources. The perception held by many users was that this technology was big, heavy, required specialized handling, and most importantly required high vacuum to work. Also, MS methods belonged to the chemists and most early instruments were in chemistry departments and only recently have biologists been allowed access. This thinking was held and is still held by many outside the discipline. The result of this thinking was the development of many different approaches to solving these perceived issues. Many interesting instruments and approaches resulted and are presented here.
