ABSTRACT

Alternative energy projects (including energy efficiency, clean energy generation, and biofuels) are attractive to tribes and developers interested in projects on tribal lands. Project design, development, and implementation adjustments are necessary for successful projects, and this entry proposes a methodology useful to both tribal entities and organizations interested in working with those tribal entities. Drawing from the concepts central to triple bottom line businesses and sustainability practitioners, we provide a structured approach to working in tribal communities that emphasizes understanding and win–win–win thinking, generating benefits appropriate to each partner. Although this approach was developed for tribal communities, it can also be used effectively in rural areas and when working in other cultures, where differing worldviews are apparent.
