ABSTRACT

Each earlier chapter has a distinct mathemagical theme; this one has two. It also has a colorful Swedish undercurrent. We start with a separation algorithm that is more than half a century old-though it’s still not that well-known-give a few applications of it in action, and then move on to another ingenious principle of similar vintage and two terrific effects that arise from it and its generalization. This is all made possible thanks to four very creative people from various places on the magic-mathematics1 spectrum: Lennart Green, Ron Wohl, Persi Diaconis, and Ron Graham.
