ABSTRACT

Introduction to resource leveling The fundamental wish list of PMs is that they have unlimited labor and monetary resources to perform the project work. However, the reality is that many PMs have this wish list in mind but management does not understand the operational significance of this. The unfortunate consequence of this is that there is a mismatch between the plan and actual resource availability. Therefore, management never actually commits the needed resources to successfully perform the planned work. There are two common problems faced by projects and that is setting a realistic date for deliverables and creating a schedule for resources to perform tasks that result in meeting the deliverables (Dumond 2005). In today’s competitive environment, resource leveling is a key to cost reduction, faster service, and increased flexibility (Ashayeri and Selen 2005). Each project is unique in terms of time and resources needed to transform a project to its final state (Vidal and Marle 2008).
