ABSTRACT

This book is intended as a resource for systems designers and developers to assist in IAS design from an interaction-centered point of view using coherent systems design guidance and methodologies. In Chapter  1, the world of current adaptive systems was discussed, including examples of good and poor systems design and associated human-machine interactivity and its implications. Explanation was also provided regarding the scope of human-machine and human-automation interaction, as well as some of the concepts behind developing good human interactioncentered designs. The information discussed in Chapters  2-6 regarding interface and automation technologies, conceptual architectures, analytical techniques, agentbased design methods, and the use of behavioral-and psychophysiological-based operator state monitoring approaches is intended to serve as guidance for designing and developing IASs. Part of the guidance provided in this chapter is based on previous chapters, and part is based on practical experience.
