ABSTRACT

The measurement of physical quantities plays a vital role in all branches of science and technology, and combustion is no exception. Lord Kelvin stated in 1891, “when you measure what you are speaking about and express them in numbers, you know something about them and when you cannot measure them or when you cannot express in numbers, your knowledge is of meager and unsatisfactory kind. It may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely in your thought advanced to the stage of science.” Hence, it is important to learn and master the measurement techniques for the advancement of combustion science and engineering. In this chapter, we will learn about the basic concepts of a generic measurement system that can be applied as well to the measurements in a combustion system.
