ABSTRACT
Polygraphic substitution ciphers replace characters in groups, rather than one at a time. In Section 5.4 we examined the Playfair cipher, which falls into this category, since the characters are substituted for in pairs. We now turn to a more mathematically sophisticated example, matrix encryption.
