ABSTRACT

Do you know any mathematicians? They do exist in real life, with interesting biographies, but also in novels, where they are sometimes so strange as to be unrecognizable. Who can tell them apart? The Carl Friedrich Gauss from the biography by Hubert Mania is a historical genius; the Karl Friedrich Gauss from the novel Measuring the World by Daniel Kehlmann is an interesting but somewhat bizarre novelistic invention.
