ABSTRACT
The Tuskegee Syphilis Study began with at least one good purpose: to consider ways to improve the health of African–American males in the south. Good intentions aside, it remains a potent symbol of the government's abuse of African–Americans in the United States, racism in science, arrogance of the medical community, and misconduct in research involving human participants.
