ABSTRACT

Universities in the United States have responded to the tremendous growth in the nonprofit sector over the past quarter-century by developing programs for future leaders of the sector. University-based programs in nonprofit management and philanthropic studies are available at the graduate and undergraduate level, in noncredit and continuing education programs, and increasingly online. This entry traces the emergence of third-sector studies within the university and maps curricular changes over time, with particular attention paid to current trends. A synopsis of an ongoing debate regarding where within the university is the “best place” for the location of these programs is provided.
