ABSTRACT

International nongovernmental organizations (INGOs), which are focused on the protection and promotion of human rights, are a critical element of international civil society. Empirical research has found that human rights INGOs do have a positive impact on human rights. Although they face numerous limitations, human rights INGOs actively engage in domestic and international efforts to improve human rights conditions. This entry will define human rights INGOs and examine their role in the promotion of human rights, including their effectiveness and participation in transnational advocacy networks.
