ABSTRACT

As the nonprofit sector continues to grow in size and significance, the role and impact of governance of nonprofit organizations has become an increasingly important and popular area among nonprofit scholars and practitioners. Extensive research and practice in nonprofit governance is based on the premise that a well-performing governance function coincides with effective and high-performing organization. This entry describes and discusses the basic elements of the governance function and the work of boards of directors.
