ABSTRACT

Nonprofit leaders are seeking ways to increase their organization's impact in an increasingly complex environment. The strategic management framework provides a systematic set of processes that assist nonprofit organizations in setting direction for the organization by developing and implementing strategies to produce positive outcomes. This entry introduces and discusses the concept of strategic management and its relevance to nonprofit organizations. It provides a broad overview of the components of strategic management including strategy development and strategy implementation process. The entry concludes by discussing the empirical research to date on the impact of strategic management processes on nonprofit capacity building and organizational effectiveness.
