ABSTRACT

We will then apply this knowledge in the following three chapters to studies of the flows of solar radiation (including multiple scattering), and thermal radiation, through our atmosphere. These flows and interactions are central to the subject of Remote Sensing, which is the key technique we use to study our atmosphere, its thermodynamic state and its changing composition. All of this will put us in a position to ask, and answer, the fundamental question: what will happen if (or rather when) we alter the composition of our atmosphere, or the characteristics of its surface.
