In order to understand the absorption and emission of electromagnetic radiation by the gases in our atmosphere, we need to understand the nature of both the radiation fields and the atoms and molecules involved. While it might be assumed that Quantum Mechanics is the only language to describe the structure of atoms and molecules, there is, in fact, an earlier and simpler model, due to Lorentz, which we shall also explore.
