ABSTRACT
One of the most fundamental facts about the physical environment of our planet is that a major geographic imbalance exists between the inflow of solar radiation (energy) and the outflow of terrestrial, or longwave, radiation. This imbalance is manifested in the large temperature difference between equatorial and polar regions. The tilt of the Earth’s rotational axis modulates this temperature difference, producing the seasonal cycle experienced in middle and high latitudes.
