ABSTRACT
Far too often food chains have been envisioned as mechanisms operating solely to concentrate pollutants as they move from prey to predator. Less often are they objectively recognized as ecological processes, with the net effect of concentration or dilution of materials during their transport along the food chain being dependent upon a complex of biological variables.
