ABSTRACT

Most methods used by ecotoxicologists to determine lethality have their origins in mammalian toxicology. In the developing eld of ecotoxicology, this adoption allowed very rapid, initial advancement since established techniques and concepts could be quickly incorporated. It also led to some inconsistencies that must be resolved as ecotoxicology progresses. Also, some very worthwhile techniques in mammalian toxicology have yet to be assimilated into ecotoxicology. This chapter will explore these borrowed concepts and techniques, discuss those remaining underexploited, and identify inconsistencies between application in mammalian toxicology and ecotoxicology.
