ABSTRACT

About the chapter This chapter focuses on the design of common types of displays and controls used in a wide variety of settings. The chapter begins by discussing the importance of designing an interface that provides a good mapping of the relationships between displays, controls, and their effects. Doing so improves usability and minimizes the need to provide additional displays that attempt to solve problems that could have been prevented in the first place by properly arranging the displays and controls. The remaining sections provide several design principles for both displays and controls. The latter discussion includes an explanation of each principle and examples illustrating how they might be applied.
