ABSTRACT

About the chapter The objective of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the problem of constructing questionnaires and designing interviews as information-gathering tools for ergonomic design. In many cases, the designer needs to determine the attitudes, concerns, objectives, and goals of various subpopulations of people on the use of a particular product. In most cases, the questionnaire can be used to gather such information economically. In other cases, questionnaires are used after experiments to collect subjective opinions of the experimental subjects during or subsequent to the experiment. Although questionnaire data or interviews of persons leaving an experiment may not be viewed as hard evidence, subjective appraisals are infinitely better than no evidence and sometimes are the only available evidence.
