ABSTRACT

Up to this point, we have considered processors that have a single instruction stream (i.e., a single control unit bringing about a serial instruction execution) operating upon a single data stream (i.e., a single unit of data is being operated upon at any given time). We have also described various enhancements to each of the subsystems (memory, ALU, control, and input/output [I/O]) that increase the processing speed of the system. In addition, components from the fastest hardware technology available are used in the implementation of these subsystems to achieve higher speeds.
