ABSTRACT

Anthropogenic (human) activities often result in a need to modify and manage runoff and stream discharge: (1) to prevent, reduce, or control adverse impacts associated with changes in both the low and high discharges; (2) to provide a water supply; (3) to enhance water quality; (4) to generate power; (5) for recreational purpose; or (6) to protect, enhance, or restore stream health. Management strategies are diverse and might include the use of rain barrels or retention and detention ponds to reduce runoff associated with urbanization; the use of conservation and treatment practices to prevent and reduce adverse impacts associated with agricultural systems; the installation of culverts under roads; construction of a vane in a stream for bank stability purposes or to provide sh habitat; or the construction of large multipurpose dams that provide water, control oods, generate power, and have recreational value.
