ABSTRACT

US food policy affects the safety, integrity, nutritional quality, and accessibility of the nation’s food supply as well as the nutritional guidance given to the American population. Food and nutrition policy makers advocate for policies, regulations, and programs designed to protect and advance the health and nutritional status of the American public. National nutrition policy includes such disparate programs as the nation’s food and nutrition guidelines issued jointly by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), labeling, and micronutrient fortification. It is not surprising, then, that federal nutrition policies exert considerable influence on state and local decision makers, stakeholders, and consumers.
