ABSTRACT

Community-based nonprofit organizations fill the gap that is created when the for-profit sector and government systems do not adequately address community needs, often with the help of grants. A grant is an award made to an organization. The grant is earmarked to carry out a specific project proposed by one or more of the organization’s members. The grant may be in the form of goods and services as well as money. Occasionally, an award is made to an individual, but most grantors prefer to make awards to the organization itself because the life span of the organization is greater than the expected tenure of an individual employee. Thus, the applicant for a grant is the organization submitting the proposal, not the employee writing the grant application.
