ABSTRACT
When a machine develops a defect while in operation, the result is usually excessive noise and vibration, though by performing a detailed signal analysis of the vibration of the machine the defect along with its cause can be determined. However, on the shop floor where the machine is located, one’s attention is drawn toward the machine because of the noise produced by it. Thus an understanding of the basics of noise is required, which is presented in this chapter.
