ABSTRACT

There are many ways to look at the “plantscape,” or plants in the landscape, and sustainability. The aesthetic aspects of the plantscape include considerations for human enjoyment and well-being. The environmental aspects of plants include carbon sequestration, the associated release of oxygen to the atmosphere, and the cooling effect of evapotranspiration. Plants are an integral part of an ecosystem, which is a dynamic complex of plant, animal, and microorganism communities and their nonliving environment interacting as a functional unit. The ecological aspects include plant-soil interactions as well as the food and habitat that plants provide for insects, birds, and other wildlife.
