ABSTRACT

Wind affects house energy use most importantly in winter. In winter months, the air is cold and tends to seep through cracks and openings in the home, allowing warm air to escape; this is not really a problem in summer. As a matter of fact, breezes in summer tend to have a cooling effect in the human environment. The presence of trees in the urban environment influences the movement of air in urban canyons (Figure 4.1) by providing turbulent mixing from above due to surface roughness of the vegetation. Trees in the city also affect the transport of pollutants through the air.
