ABSTRACT

Ethical decisions are frequently required in the management of patients suffering from neurological diseases. There are many neurological diseases that invoke life-and-death situations where intervention calls ethics into play. These involve people at both the beginning of life and at the end of life, but also in the most active and productive stages of life. The understanding of the source of ethics may have its underpinnings in neurology, and neurological studies may contribute to our understanding of the basis of ethics. Humans seem to be ethical creatures and ethical behaviour is dependent on functioning of the brain. In neurology, the traditional approach is to try and localize the possible causes for symptoms and signs, then to decide what could be the mechanism or cause and finally to try and fit them into the pattern seen in a particular disease or disorder.
