ABSTRACT

In April 1955, the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge (Macdonald Bridge) opened to accommodate the growing communities of Halifax and Dartmouth, in Nova Scotia, Canada (Figure 8.1). Just 15 years later, in July 1970, a second long-span suspension bridge, the A. Murray MacKay Bridge, was opened. The Macdonald Bridge has a main span of 1447 ft (441 m) and side spans of 525 ft (160 m) each. It was built as a two-lane bridge with a narrow sidewalk and converted to three lanes with a pedestrian walkway and bicycle lanes in 1999. It is undergoing replacement of the suspended spans of the bridge in 2015-2017.
