The gonads continue to develop during the 4th week but remain in an indifferent stage. At this time it is impossible to determine the sex of an embryo by examination. The ventromedial surface of the urogenital ridge begins to thicken and bulge into the coelom as a separate genital ridge, which lies medial and parallel to the mesonephric ridge.
