ABSTRACT
Sound waves in air are longitudinal waves, which means that the oscillation of the wave motion is in the direction of propagation. Sound waves are characterized by sound pressure, the excess pressure over atmospheric pressure, and particle velocity, the average velocity of the gas molecules in a small volume. Note that the particle velocity is a vector quantity.
