11.1 INTRODUCTION
Many different names exist to attempt to encompass and define the workforce, facilities, equipment, and resources that an institution commits to animal husbandry and care (e.g., resources, centers, cores, services, departments, divisions, units, groups, etc.). Regardless of the name, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs) are mandated by regulations such as the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to have oversight of these organizations from both programmatic and facilities perspectives. This chapter explores some of the more common resource facility-related and programmatic issues encountered by IACUCs and delves further into some of the unique challenges presented by areas managed by the principal investigator (PI). In addition, it provides suggestions on ways that IACUCs can deal with the many sources of information and topics of animal research and welfare needed to assure knowledgeable oversight of animal facilities.
