ABSTRACT

Forage and Pasture development is an ancient practice. Occurrence of domesticated farm animals meant need for regular supply of forage grasses/legumes. Historical data suggests that forages such as Alfalfa was in vogue in Turkey and Asia Minor region during 1300 B.C. Evidences for forage crops could be derived from painting in Egypt dating 2000-1300 B.C. Archeologists suggest that silos were regularly used by Carthegians during 1200 B.C. [1]. Forages were popular during Roman Era. Writings by Varro (116-27 B.C.) and Cato (234-149 B.C.) indicate culture of forages such as alfalfa, cowpea, turnip, lupines and vetches.
