ABSTRACT

Agroecosystems that support a single species of crop are frequently encountered in certain geographic zones. For example, rice mono-crops grown season after season dominates the landscape in South and South-east Asia. This has been possible both due to precipitation patterns, apt facility to irrigate the crop and supply optimum levels of fertilizer-based nutrients. Monocropping zones of cereals occur in many agrarian areas (Plates 1, 2, 3 and 4). Monocrops of wheat are common in the Northern Great Plains of USA, and Central Plains of Europe. Similarly, monocrops of soybean dominate the landscapes in parts of Matto Grasso and Pampas of South America. Monocrops of sorghum and other coarse grain crops like pearl millet or finger millet are observed in dry land agroecosystems of Africa and Asia. Monocrops of cotton are preferred in large expanses of Vertisol belts of Southern India, Central Plains of USA, etc.
