ABSTRACT

In 2001, Dean Kamen announced the arrival of his self-balancing, zero emissions, personal transportation vehicle, the Segway® Personal Transporter (PT). Segway’s research and development was focused on creating devices that took up a minimal amount of space, were extremely maneuverable, and could operate on pedestrian sidewalks and pathways.2 Its dynamic stabilization technology with gyroscopes and tilt sensors monitored a user’s center of gravity about 100 times a second. When a person leaned slightly forward, the Segway moved forward. When leaning back, the Segway moved back.
