ABSTRACT
This chapter gives a brief review and compiles recent developments in the heterogeneously catalyzed conversion of synthesis gas to the important short-chain alcohols methanol and ethanol. While methanol synthesis has been known for decades and is applied as large-scale industrial process, the research on the formation of ethanol from synthesis gas is still explorative and just a few developments have made it so far to the pilot plant.
