ABSTRACT

Check dematerialization is a comprehensive overhaul of the payment cycle from check processing to the calculation of cash flow and float values. Techniques for the dematerialized processing of checks depend on the degree to which the end-to-end treatment has eliminated paper. Electronic check presentment is the electronic representation of the data contained in the paper-based check. Check imaging consists in replacing paper checks with their digitized pictures in the clearance and settlement networks. Substitute checks satisfy the needs of banks and bank customers that need to have a paper document because they are unable or unwilling to process electronic images of check. For consumers, check deposits can be done from a mobile terminal if the user’s bank provides an application with that capability to be downloaded to a mobile terminal.
