ABSTRACT

Many public health core functions are based on collection and assessments. Public health programs usually service at least one public health core function, and many of them are inherently data-intensive. With few exceptions, most public health data from the state public health agency are administrative data, which can be categorized as program-based record systems, health provider–based systems, and payer-based systems. In this chapter, the authors describe a number of important datasets from the Nebraska Pubic Health Data Inventory. The Nebraska State Immunization Information System (NESIIS) is a secure, statewide, web-based system that was developed to connect and share immunization information among public clinics, private provider offices, local health departments, schools, hospitals, and other health care facilities that administer immunizations. The authors provide some data quality and usability indicators whenever possible, such as accessibility, reliability, analytic utility, and enhancement potential. They tried to organize datasets first by program data and then by survey data.
