ABSTRACT

Lithium-ion batteries were commercialized in 19911 as a natural result from the wide knowledgeinintercalationchemistrydevelopedbyinorganicandsolid-statechemists inthe1970s.The›rstgenerationofsuchbatteriesallowedstoringmorethantwice theenergycomparedtonickelorleadbatteriesofthesamesizeandmass. These typicallyconsistedofLixCoO2 at the positive electrode and a carbonaceous negative electrode,withanelectrolytecontainingalithiumsaltsuchasLiPF6 dissolved in an organic solvent or, most commonly, a mixture of them (see Figure 8.1).
