ABSTRACT
Analyses should achieve designs that prevent failure but failure can mean several different things. It can mean failure to prevent a collapse or it can mean failure to meet requirements of movement and leakage that do not themselves cause a collapse. Different geotechnical analyses investigate collapse (often called an ultimate limit state) and performance, particularly ground movements (often called a serviceability limit state).
