ABSTRACT

For grins, let’s compute effective values of the elastic moduli for particular series and parallel combinations of blocks or bars of homogeneous1 material.

Example [ Series Composition and Young’s Modulus ]

Two uniform bars with common cross-sectional area A are firmly2 attached together, and one end of the composite is affixed to an anchor point as shown in Figure 3.1. The two bars are made of different materials, with Young’s moduli Y1 and Y2, and possess lengths L1 and L2, respectively. The length of the composite bar

3 is

L(12) = L1 + L2 ,

where we have neglected [or subtracted away] any increase in length ascribable to the means of fastening the constituent bars.
