Introduction

This chapter reviews information on chromosome set manipulation methods, sex control and gene transfer in common carp. Induced gynogenesis, androgenesis and polyploidy are usually considered as chromosome set manipulation methods. Development and application of the hormonal sex reversal are the basis for sex regulation in common carp, as well as in other fi sh species. The chapter’s section on gene transfer includes descriptions of methods for production and properties of transgenic common carp. Common carp is a convenient species for chromosome set manipulation and gene transfer studies because of its high fecundity, established methods of artifi cial spawning1 and existence of unique morphological genetic markers. The development of techniques in this chapter is given from a chronological viewpoint. This chapter includes data obtained in koi also, since koi is an ornamental form of common carp. Special attention is given to some important methodological aspects; this information is especially important for scientists and aquaculturists who are new in these areas.
