ABSTRACT

Grinding has been employed in manufacture for more than a hundred years, although earliest practice can be traced back to Neolithic times (Woodbury 1959). The lack of machine tool technology meant that primitive operations were mostly limited to simple hand-held operations. An early device for dressing a sandstone grinding wheel was patented by Altzschner in 1860 (Woodbury 1959).
