ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the most important Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS) network technologies and their relevant aspects for energy applications. Three international standards are LonWorks (ISO/IEC 14908), KNX (ISO/IEC 14543-3), and BACnet (ISO/IEC 16484-5). The area of power system automation is characterized by the usage of various approaches and communication protocols. The typical power system automation architecture starts from operation centers, connecting the user interfaces of the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems via a wide-area network (WAN) connection typically isolated from other communication networks such as enterprise local-area network (LAN) or Internet with substations and associated field devices. A wide range of protocols are used within this architecture: The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC 60870-5) within the WAN, Modbus, Distributed Network Protocol Version 3 (DNP3), IEC 61850 within substations, RS485, RS232, wired connections, field buses on the field level, and many others.
