ABSTRACT

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) proposed a new communications standard for the wind power industry aiming at providing a common communication approach for wind power plant (WPP) monitoring and control. The IEC 61400-25 standard may be regarded as an extension of the IEC 61850 standard [1,13], which deals with communication networks and systems in substations. The communication approach is based on three different areas: (1) the information model (IM), which defines the hierarchy of relevant information in WPPs using standardized names and semantics; (2) the information exchange model (IEM), which defines the access to the content and structure of the WPP IMs; and (3) the mapping of these two models to standard protocol stacks, such as OPC, MMS, or DNP3. This chapter explains the requirements on communication defined in the IEC 61400-25 series and the basic concepts of the metamodel, that is, the concept of logical device (LD), Logical node (LN), and data classes (DC).
